Tools to Check Accessibility

Testing Plan:

For a number of developers, web accessibility is a process that is addressed at the end of site development, or a group of developers will hand off the site to someone whose task it is to monitor and make changes to the accessibility features of a site.

Creating a Practical Testing Plan:

  1. Remember your audience – think about how your site will be accessed
  2. Test with your browser
    1. Turn off images, Don’t use the mouse, Turn off your speakers, Increase font size, Change window size.
  1. Testing with Toolbars
    1. Turn off CSS, Turn off Javascript, Set to Greyscale, Display Structure (Headings, Lists…)
  1. Run online Accessibility Tests on representative pages
    1. use more than one tool, example:  WebXact & Wave
  1. Listen to your pages
    1. JAWS or HomePage Reader
  1. If you have access, Run a LIFT Report
  2. Hands on Accessibility Testing with Users who have disabilities
  3. Repeat as needed…
